The Chongqing DT Fund is a joint effort run by DT Capital of Shanghai and funded by the Chongqing Venture Capital Guidance Fund. Pharmaron Acquires Bridge Labs China Jan 12, 2010: Pharmaron Holdings Limited has completed its acquisition of Bridge Laboratories China. Both Pharmaron, which is headquartered in California, and Bridge have laboratory facilities in Beijing. Pharmaron said the acquisition would “extend” the range of services it offers. Bridge provided the first western standard GLP-compliant preclinical toxicology services in China. In August 2008, data from Bridge’s animal studies was accepted by the FDA as part of an IND filing. Terms of the Pharmaron-Bridge transaction were not disclosed. More details...

GL Biochem Reaches Final Terms for Reverse Merger Jan 5, 2010: GL Biochem, a Shanghai peptide company, has signed a definitive agreement to complete a reverse merger with Commonwealth Biotechnologies, Inc. GL Biochem is the world’s largest supplier of research-grade peptide products and peptide reagents. Its single shareholder will own 78% of the new company’s stock, post-merger. Dr. Hongyan Xu, Founder, Chairman, and CEO of the GL Group, will become Chairman and CEO of CBI, and GL Biochem will control five of seven seats on the Board of Directors. More details...

Shanghai ChemPartner Places Third in Fast 50 China Jan 5, 2010: Shanghai ChemPartner, a subsidiary of CRO ShangPharma, was named to the 2009 Deloitte Technology Fast 50 China list, claiming 3rd place among the fastest-growing high tech companies in China. ChemPartner was the only life science company in the top 10. The award was based on ChemPartner's three-year revenue growth from 2006 to 2008. More details...

AlphaRx Outsources Hepatitis Drug Manufacturing to Venturepharm Dec 18, 2009: AlphaRx signed a long-term contract manufacturing agreement with Venturepharm. Under the agreement, Venturepharm will supply AlphaRx with the API for its experimental hepatitis drug ARX1088. ARX1088 is an oral interferon inducer that AlphRx is testing as an adjunct to standard interferon regimens. The company hopes to market the drug eventually in China and other emerging markets. Crown Bioscience Forms Cancer Collaboration with Pfizer Dec 10, 2009: Crown Bioscience, a pre-clinical CRO providing biology services for oncology indications, will collaborate with Pfizer to research and develop novel drugs for cancers that are prevalent in Asia and remain unaddressed medical needs. Crown will receive an upfront payment and research funding, as well as milestone payments upon achieving preclinical and clinical goals. Shanghai ChemPartner Aids Agios’ Cancer Research Breakthrough Dec 9, 2009: Shanghai ChemPartner, one of ShangPharma’s several subsidiaries, said its scientists contributed to the breakthrough cancer research announced by Agios Pharmaceuticals, with whom ChemPartner has an ongoing relationship. In the November 22 online issue of Nature, Agios scientists published an article entitled "Cancer-associated IDH1 mutations produce 2-hydroxyglutarate (2HG)." Their research, at least partly carried out at ChemPartner, showed the mutated IDH1 gene has a novel enzyme activity consistent with a cancer-causing gene, or oncogene, revealing new possibilities for novel cancer treatments. PPD Buys BioDuro, Its Second Major China CRO Acquisition This Month Nov 18, 2009: PPD, Inc. is quickly building up its China-based CRO capability. The company announced it will acquire BioDuro LLC, a CRO based in Beijing whose 660 employees focus on drug discovery. The acquisition complements PPD’s purchase of Excel PharmaStudies earlier this month. Excel is a CRO that conducts Phase II through Phase IV clinical trials from its offices throughout China. Shanghai ChemPartner Opens European Headquarters Oct 19, 2009: Next month, CRO Shanghai ChemPartner will open a European headquarters office in Denmark that will be known as ChemPartner Europe ApS. The office, which will function as a liaison to Europe’s biopharma industry, will be sited in Scion Research Park in Hørsholm, in the outskirts of Copenhagen. This area is called Medicon Valley and is home to many pharmas and service companies. More details...
